One of the equally popular works of Vasily Perov can be considered the famous painting Portrait of Savrasov, painted in 1878. From the biography of the artists it is known that they were very good friends, so the author was able to accurately convey all the emotions and inner experiences of a friend, constantly tormenting Alexei Savrasov at that time. His life was filled with difficulties and emerging barriers in the recognition by society of the artist’s talent.

The portrait was done in brown tones, the background was painted in rough, random strokes, Alexei Savrasov's jacket was also blurred with a brush, but Vasily Perov's face was drawn with incredible accuracy, catching every breath of his friend. Savrasov sits exactly on the chair, turning his head slightly to the side, so we can clearly see only one protruding part of the face, the second is covered with a deep shadow. Aleksey Savrasov's portrait shows large features, a large wide nose, a sloping forehead, protruding above the eyebrows. Black thick hair looks a little untidy and disheveled, the lower part of the face is covered with a beard, inherent in all artists of the past era.

Savrasov glumly looks at us from the portrait, as if preparing to listen to the next batch of criticism about his works, which high society did not want to accept, despite the great talent of this person. In his paintings there was not all the pomp and luxury that they wanted to see around him, because Alexei Savrasov painted ordinary landscapes of Russian nature.

Vasily Petrov managed to convey the whole drama of the life of a friend in one portrait. Looking at the face of Alexei Savrasov, one can feel the power and strength of the great artist, however, peering intently into his dark eyes, an understanding comes of how sensitive, vulnerable his delicate soul is.
